I try to read most of Mat Twassel’s SOL submissions. They’re usually a quick read: short, and to the point. Their brevity usually precludes any detailed character development, and yet in just a few words he is able to convey who these people are, what they’re doing, and where they’re coming from.
Sometimes you don’t need in-depth backgrounds of fictional people you only meet briefly and will never encounter again. Mat is very good at this, presenting folks, capturing a short but significant moment in their timeline, and then moving on. He often leaves his readers’ own imaginations to fill in what happens next.
Sadly, it seems it’s very difficult for authors of very short stories like Mat’s to capture SOL’s top scores. Too many readers apparently want more complete descriptions of settings and character backgrounds and thought motivations to elevate their ratings into the 7s and above. It’s really hard to develop much of a detailed plot line in just a few thousand words, so I’m sure that detracts from his overall scores. He makes up for that somewhat by being nearly technically perfect. The appeal of his stories tends to vary between readers. Still, the author’s submissions consistently rate in at least the mid-6s with the occasional low 7, which, for as brief as most of his submissions are, is a damned fine result. And this story is no exception.
I suggest you take a look at every one of this author’s almost daily offerings. They’re short enough that even if they aren’t your specific “cup of tea,” at least you won’t have wasted copious amounts of time reading them. And I suspect you’ll probably find you really do enjoy them. I know I do!
And frankly, most of his stories are accompanied by some damned fine NSFW illustrations. So I find they have very good visual appeal! If you’re into that sort of thing, his artwork is often worth the price of admission alone!
